Day 18 (September 7, 2006) - Deadwood, SD
<<^>>
Last stop in South Dakota before we enter Wyoming: Deadwood - the Western town that inspired the new HBO series by the same name (don't ask me more, never seen it. I don't have HBO). It's actually kind of cute, the building facades have been faithfully restored to their hey-day era, too bad that right behind the doors you only find slot machines and gambling places, or a souvenir shop. It's Las Vegas meets the West at its best. The type of tourism it attracts nowadays is the "over 75" who love to sit in front of slot machines and pull the lever to try their luck. Busloads of these tourists get into town every day. Only one genuine place remains: No 10 Saloon, a local hangout which had the taste of hiding slot machines in a separate room. Saw dust is spread on the floor and the dark wood paneling smells of liquor. Further down the street there is the Morning Star Saloon, owned by Kevin Costner and his brother.

We thought we would gamble our money on food, so we settled for a pizza place in a basement pub. The pizza cook and his helper kept joking around as they were making pizzas to go. They looked like ZZ-Top groupies, and they probably were given the type of music that they were blasting in the place. The pizza dough was more like a focaccia with tomato sauce, melted cheddar cheese, mushrooms and onions, but was delicious. The cook was extremely friendly and appreciated our appreciation of his cuisine.

We spent about 2 hours in the town and we felt we got just enough of the vibe there to head out. We will be driving as far as we can get in a day on I-90, through the Big Horn National Forest to Buffalo, then taking scenic Route 16 to Worland, hoping to get to Thermopolis before nighttime. The views along Route 16, especially through the canyon at Powder River Pass are out of this world.

Deadwood honoring its local hero: Mr. Hickok shot in his back at a poker table. Calamity Jane is buried next to him in the Deadwood cemetery.

A view of Main Street, from the outside it looks authentic!

The Morning Star, owned by Kevin Costner.

Welcome to Wyoming! Yee-ha.

Along Route 16 we saw deer, antelopes and the occasional bison. This one was particulary photogenic.

Smile!
